In a surprise upset, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is getting bumped from the top spot at the North American box office by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Revenant, starring DiCaprio and directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, is on course to win Friday with $14 million-$15 million, compared to $11 million for Force Awakens. It's the first time sinceForce Awakens opened on Dec. 18 that it hasn't come in No. 1.
Moreover, it puts The Revenant in a close race with the Star Wars blockbuster for the weekend crown, with both films now tipped to earn $37 million-$39 million. It's always possible the landscape could change on Saturday with Force Awakens pulling ahead, however narrowly.
Either way, the results are a major victory for DiCaprio and Inarritu on the eve of Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony, where The Revenant is up for best picture, best director and best actor in the drama categories.
Heading into the weekend, The Revenant was tracking to gross in the $20 million range.
